Featuring dramatic war scenes reminiscent of HARRISON'S FLOWERS, this is a harrowing tale of the atrocities committed during the Balkan War. Journalist Ema, working with two American colleges Laura and David, reports from war torn Kosovo, Croatia. When the Serbs take control, the Americans are ordered out. They are unsuccessful in persuading Ema to leave with them. When Serbian forces oust a refugee camp where Ema is hiding, she is subjected to rape. She becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby girl, which she names Ana. Ema is abandoned in shame by friends and family and reluctantly puts Ana into an orphanage. After the war, David returns with Ema's payment, and vows to her find her baby.
